Wheelchairs
Browse by type
Manual wheelchairs provide mobility for people who cannot walk far, or at all, and are either self propelled or pushed by an attendant. This range spans transit and standard chairs for occasional use through to configured custom wheelchairs, folding and tilt in space models, and power add ons that convert a manual chair to assisted power.
Prescribing a manual wheelchair starts with the person: seat width and depth, back height, footrest length, weight, propulsion ability and postural needs. Then consider the environment, transport, who will be pushing and how the chair will be funded through NDIS, Home Care Packages and Support at Home, DVA or private purchase.
Thrive Lifecare can trial wheelchairs at home or in the showroom, script and quote configured chairs, deliver and set up Tasmania-wide, and service them. Book a trial with our team in Tasmania to get the fit right from the start.
Need a scripted chair? See Complex Rehab: Manual Wheelchairs.
Common questions
What is the difference between a transit and a self propelled wheelchair?
A transit (attendant propelled) wheelchair has small rear wheels and is pushed by a carer. A self propelled wheelchair has large rear wheels with push rims so the user can move themselves. Many people who are pushed most of the time still choose self propelled wheels for the option of independence.
What does a scripted or custom wheelchair involve?
A custom wheelchair is built to measurements and a prescription from an OT or physio: seat width and depth, back height, wheel position, cushion and supports. We work through the script with the therapist, arrange a trial of a similar chair where possible and quote for the funder.
Can I trial a wheelchair?
Yes. Book a trial and we will arrange it at home or in our Northern Tasmania or Southern Tasmania showroom, with a consultant who can adjust the equipment to the person. There is no obligation.
How is a wheelchair funded?
We quote in the format the funder needs. NDIS (self, plan or agency managed), Home Care Packages and Support at Home, DVA and private purchase are all common. Send us the OT report or script and we do the paperwork.
