About this product

The Jarven OptiCell SMART R8 is an alternating air mattress replacement for clients at high and very high risk of pressure injury, rated by the maker for use with category 4 injuries. The R8 cells inflate to 200 mm, the mattress is 2000 mm long and comes in 850, 900 and 1050 mm widths, and the safe working load is 250 kg. The OC55 pump senses the client’s weight and bed position and sets the pressure automatically, so the carer does not have to dial in a weight.

Cells are individually replaceable and any cell can be decoupled to offload a specific area, for example a heel or sacral wound. Micro air loss cells move air through the surface to help manage heat and moisture. The OptiTex four-way stretch PU cover is water resistant, vapour permeable and fire rated, and unzips for laundering. The pump weighs 3.4 kg and runs at 21 dB.

Key features

  • True alternating mode with top-access valves, plus static mode
  • Automatic pressure setting from weight and bed position sensors
  • Cell decoupling anywhere on the surface for local offloading
  • Micro air loss cells for ventilation and moisture control
  • CPR quick release valve
  • Settings retained through a power failure; returns to normal mode after nursing mode
  • Safe working load 250 kg; cell height 200 mm
  • OptiTex four-way stretch cover, removable and washable

Who it suits

A client who is bed-bound or spends long periods in bed with an existing pressure injury, or a very high risk score, and a care team that needs a mattress that sets itself. The 1050 mm width suits a wider bed or a larger client. For a lower risk client who still mobilises, a hybrid such as the OSKA Aria+ is quieter and needs no pump.

Good to know

  • Pump and mattress are supplied as a system; check the bed platform width against the 850, 900 or 1050 mm mattress
  • 2 year warranty on manufacturing defects
  • Complies with EN 597-1 and EN 597-2 fire standards
  • Distributed in Australia by Staebel; spare cells are available
