EquaGel General Cushion

Code CE2024

The EquaGel General is a 50 mm dry-polymer gel wheelchair cushion with a contoured pelvic area, rated to 270 kg. Its two-stage column structure buckles under bony prominences to spread load. It suits wheelchair and everyday chair users at medium pressure risk who want a cushion that does not need a pump or daily checks.

About this product

The EquaGel General is a dry-polymer gel wheelchair cushion made in two stages: a thin-wall comfort layer on top and a thick-wall support layer underneath. The gel columns buckle under the ischial tuberosities and coccyx so pressure is spread sideways rather than concentrated, and the pelvic area is contoured to help keep the pelvis in place. It is 50 mm thick and rated to a user weight of 270 kg.

The cover is fluid resistant, vapour permeable and flame resistant, and comes off for a cold wash. The gel itself is wiped down with warm soapy water or a diluted bleach solution. There is nothing to inflate and no valve to check. Available in widths of 16 to 22 in and depths of 16 to 20 in.

Key features

  • 50 mm (2 in) dry-polymer gel, no fluid or air to leak
  • Two-stage column structure: comfort layer over support layer
  • Contoured pelvic area for positioning and weight distribution
  • Retains about 30 mm of buckling gel under the pressure points
  • Rated to 270 kg
  • Fluid resistant, vapour permeable, flame resistant cover
  • Twelve sizes from 405 x 405 mm (16 x 16 in) to 560 x 510 mm (22 x 20 in)

Who it suits

A wheelchair user or lift chair user with a medium level of pressure risk who sits for long periods and wants a low-maintenance cushion, including clients who cannot manage the daily checks an air cushion needs. It is also a reasonable choice for a client who runs hot on foam. For a client with a history of sacral or ischial breakdown, or who needs a deeper contour to control pelvic obliquity, a high-risk air or hybrid cushion is a better fit.

Good to know

  • Size by wheelchair seat width and depth; the cushion should match the seat pan, not the client
  • Cover: cold wash, air dry or tumble dry without heat
  • Gel: warm soapy water or 1:10,000 bleach solution
  • Heavier than a foam cushion, about 3 kg in the smaller sizes
