The Melrose Hornet is a fixed frame day wheelchair built to script in titanium, the lightest chair in the Melrose lifestyle range. A standard 405 mm (16 in) titanium frame weighs about 4.6 kg without rear wheels. Seat width and depth are made to order between 330 and 510 mm (13 to 20 in), seat height is fixed to the client’s measurement, and the user weight limit is 100 kg with a custom weight option available.
The backrest folds down for transport and adjusts in height and angle. Balance point, footplate height and camber (0 to 5 degrees) are all adjustable. Standard build includes quick-release 610 mm (24 in) spoked wheels on alloy rims, a black fabric sling seat and back with leather trim, leg strap and fabric skirt guards.

Who it suits
An active full-time self-propeller with good trunk control and upper limb function, for example with paraplegia, who wants the lightest possible chair for pushing, kerbs and lifting into a car. Melrose builds each chair to the prescriber’s script, and the wide accessory list covers armrests, brakes and suspension. A client who needs a folding frame for a small car or a carer to push regularly is better served by a folding active chair such as the Motion Composites Veloce, and a client over 100 kg needs the custom weight build or a different chair.
Good to know
- Built to order from a completed Melrose script form; seat height, frame angle and wheel position are set at manufacture, so a seating assessment comes first
- Five year frame warranty
- Also available in aluminium; paediatric and suspension versions are available
- Cushion and backrest upgrades are quoted separately
