The Spex Drop Mount is the mounting hardware that attaches a back support to the back canes of a manual wheelchair. It is a single combined clamp and mechanism unit: the back support drops in and lifts out vertically, and the release can be worked with one hand. It fits back canes from 19 mm oval to 32 mm round, carries a maximum occupant weight of 136 kg, and gives 30 degrees of forward and 30 degrees of rearward angle adjustment.
Each set weighs between 600 and 800 g depending on size and is made from a composite material. The four sizes (paediatric, small, medium and large) differ in width and depth adjustment, and all four fit back supports from 255 to 510 mm (10 to 20 in) wide and 180 to 455 mm (7 to 18 in) tall.

Who it suits
Prescribe it with any Spex back support (Zygo, Contour, Classic and the rest of the range) for a client who transfers the back on and off regularly, folds the chair for the car, or needs a lighter hardware option on an active ultralight frame. For a heavy-duty or high-tone client, or a back that will be adjusted often for angle and depth, the Spex Quad Mount hardware gives more adjustment and a higher rating.
Good to know
- Choose the size to match the back support size, not the user; ask us if you are unsure which size fits a given back shell
- Sold as hardware only; the back support shell and cover are separate
- Compatible with Spex Zygo back supports at plus or minus 50 mm of wheelchair width, and with other Spex backs over a narrower range that varies by size
- Fitting and set-up by a technician is recommended so the angle and depth are locked correctly
