About this product

Spex Foot-Fast Ankle Stabilisers are a pair of padded, contoured ankle wraps that fix the feet to a wheelchair or seating system footplate. Each wrap closes with a buckle and the strap tension is adjustable, so the hold can be firm without pressing on the ankle bone. Three sizes cover ankle circumferences from 150 to 380 mm, measured around the ankle at the height of the pad.

Attachment hardware for the footplate is included. A version with a posterior retainer strap is available to order for clients whose heels lift out of the wrap.

Key features

  • Small fits 150 to 230 mm, medium 220 to 300 mm, large 260 to 380 mm ankle circumference
  • Soft contoured pads shaped to sit around the ankle
  • Buckle closure with adjustable tension
  • Footplate fixing hardware included
  • Sold as a pair

Who it suits

A client whose feet come off the footplates because of extensor spasm, dystonia or reduced awareness, where loose feet put weight-bearing surfaces and skin at risk. They hold the foot in a set position on the footplate, which also helps a client with poor sitting balance keep a stable base. If the client needs the shoe held rather than the ankle, or has fragile skin over the malleoli, shoe holders or heel loops are the gentler option.

Good to know

  • Measure ankle circumference over the sock at the ankle bone before ordering
  • Fits most standard footplates; check the footplate has a flat area for the hardware
  • Prescribe with an OT or physio, and review strap tension as tone changes
