The Spex Axial Thigh Support is the mounting hardware that holds a lateral thigh pad at the side of a wheelchair seat to control hip abduction or keep the pelvis and thighs aligned. It comes in two mechanisms: quick-release, where the whole support lifts off with a lever, and swing-down, where it pivots down and out of the way for a side transfer. Each is available in a seat pan mount (bolts to the seat base) or a seat rail mount (clamps to the seat rail), and in left and right hand versions.
The axial bar gives up to 40 mm of width adjustment, and the hardware reduces usable seat width by 0 to 65 mm per side depending on setting. All adjustment is by hex key. The pad is chosen separately in 10 to 20 in lengths (265 to 510 mm), with slotted metal backing, a firm foam base and a pressure-reducing foam overlay under a removable neoprene cover.

Who it suits
A wheelchair user whose thighs drift into abduction or whose pelvis rotates in the seat, for example with low tone, hemiplegia or a windswept posture, where a fixed side guard is not enough. Choose swing-down for a client who transfers sideways or is hoisted, and quick-release where the support comes off for a car or for cleaning. If the client needs medial (adduction) control instead, a pommel or medial thigh support is the right product.

- Fitting by a seating technician; check the seat pan or rail is compatible before ordering
